Ph.D. - From Master's to Doctorate

At universities, a master’s or diploma degree may be followed by a doctoral degree. The doctoral program, upon successful completion of which the title “Dr.” or “Dr.-Ing.” may be used before one’s name, typically consists of a research thesis, a public colloquium, and an oral examination. Through the doctoral program, a doctoral candidate demonstrates the ability to conduct independent, in-depth research.

A doctoral program differs significantly from a bachelor’s or master’s program. While working on their dissertation, doctoral candidates typically serve as research assistants at the university itself or at a company collaborating with TU Clausthal through a research partnership.

At Clausthal University of Technology, three subject-specific doctoral degrees are awarded: the Doctor of Natural Sciences degree (“Dr. rer. nat.”) for academic achievements in a field of the natural sciences, the Doctor of Engineering degree (“Dr.-Ing.”) for academic achievements in a field of engineering, and for academic achievements in a field of economics, the Doctor of Economics degree (“Dr. rer. pol.”).
